Hot Yoga

I did something to my left wrist last Friday - I don't know what, because it didn't hurt at the time. I woke up Saturday with a terrible pain along the pinky edge. It was so severe, I couldn't even hold up a book in that hand, and bending it left was excruciating. My right wrist was hurting, too, but not nearly to the same extent. It all started the previous Monday when I went to my first kobudo class, followed by a very painful karate class. On Saturday I went to bed that night with my brace on and strapped it so tight, the nerves in my palm were pinched for the entire following day.

It's been jacked up since, and only today does it feel a bit better. I've had to skip all my combat classes this week, which has made me feel languid and stifled; but I tried to replace them with other things like biking, pole work, and... hot yoga.

Tiffany from Miss Pole recommended a place in Tosa a while back, and I've been wanting to give it a shot but just haven't been able to fit it in. Well, since I couldn't do anything involving my hands, and my upper body was feeling insanely tight and stiff, I decided this would be the week I try it.

It was just what I needed. I felt so much better afterward. My body wasn't nearly as stiff and my headache had gone away. I was a bit nervous that I would be around people who had been doing yoga for years and were much more flexible and strong that I, but I was actually doing better than most people. My balance wasn't nearly as good as I feel like it normally is; but in terms of strength, I was far succeeding everyone else there.

I was really happy that we worked on hand and headstands because I've been really wanting to learn them for a while now, and I haven't been able to make any strides on my own. I needed an instructor to guide me through it.

I was able to talk with the instructor after class about how to best work on hand/headstands, and she gave me some great tips, which was basically to use your lower abs to pull yourself up. That's not an area I have used much in pole but have been working on in my free time exercises. Last night I practiced doing hand/headstands utilizing her advice, and it made a big difference. Even though this isn't an area of my body that I use very much in other forms of exercise, I think it will eventually have an impact on pole, since a lot of more advanced moves like the Iron X will definitely need it.

Pole update 5 / Karate update 1

POLE This last weekend I took my first pole workshop with a traveling instructor. Even though I didn't find it overly helpful (or worth the money), I still consider it a milestone in my pole fitness journey. The instructor was Brynn Route, and we did a series of unconnected floor choreography sequences. I didn't find it very helpful because it wasn't applicable to anything else, and I really wanted to learn some actual pole tricks. If I'm paying $90 for a session, I want to get something out of it that I wouldn't from a regular class (or YouTube). One of the other girls, Jill, was struggling just as much as I was with a lot of the moves in the workshop (Brynn was super nice, but she only showed each complicated sequence twice without a breakdown before having us do it), which was fantastic in camaraderie. At the end of the workshop she turned to me and said, "you're so strong," which just made my life. I told her I didn't really know how to res...

Purgatory

Disney purgatory.            Writing purgatory.                          Job purgatory.  I feel like I've finally climbed to the top of the treehouse. Now I'm standing on the highest deck, looking out above the trees at the horizon, waiting to see if I'm getting a room in the house... or stepping onto the rope elevator back to the ground. It feels so close to one of them. This week is going to take forever.  It's really a 50/50 feeling. Maybe they'll accept me... maybe they won't. I'll have gotten all the way to the very end, and then let go. Let loose back in the cold, hard world of unemployment. The other Disney job, Stacy's old CT one, is still in the air; but Amy's also in the running, and I doubt I can outperform her. Although I do have Stacy's gold-star recommendation behind me, so I'm not going to give up.  Hopefully, it doesn't go that far, though. Hopefu...

January 19: Rennigers, Mt. Dora, and FARTS

Twice a year the big flea market in Mt. Dora does a really big version. The event (or location?) is called Rennigers. Today was the first day of it's first event (it's a 3-day event). Bryan invited me to go up with him, and we left around 9:45am. It was fun, even though it started raining again in the afternoon; and I bought a pair of earrings, elephant planter, and 9x9 baking pan for Oma's apple cake. This was a table I really liked at the market. If I had a wood shop, I could make it. The elephant planter, looking fabulous. It's the same one we had growing up! Then we went to Mt. Dora and got drinks at an upstairs cafe. He got a lavender latte, which he didn't like, and I got a lavender steamer, which was delicious. We wandered over to the park with the boardwalk and lighthouse. It's the smallest lighthouse I've ever seen. Not sure if it was ever functional, but it's on a "port" where boats dock, so maybe. We saw an anhinga eating a big fish ...
