Roll Train!

Today I went to a Roll Train class and oh my lord, it was so fun! I've always wanted to be one of those cool dancing roller skaters, but I can't roller skate. I've tried; I just can't do it. But I can roller blade! I asked the woman in charge a while back if I could still join, and she said yes. So I am their first roller blader, yay! To my giant surprise, I was much better at it than I expected. I thought I was going to fall on my face, but I actually held my own and was able to keep up with the others. Both the owner and I thought roller blades were going to make many of the moves difficult or impossible, but it wasn't the case. The only thing that was a little bit of a struggle was the grapevine because my wheels get in the way. But heck, I seriously didn't expect to do as good as I did. And now I'm really interested in getting better at rollerblading! I want to learn how to stop properly and jump things.

Fitness update - shoulder injury + TMNT swag

I haven't updated in a while. Lots has happened since then, at least in terms of fitness. I injured my shoulder doing pole. Specifically, it was from a few rigorous elbow grip Ayesha and Iguana sessions. I probably just did the two moves too much, which is very probable, because I was working on each for at least 20 minutes straight. At any rate, it was so painful that I finally went and saw a physical therapist. I've never seen a PT before, so that indicates how bad it was. It's not a terrible injury, but a full month later and it's still causing pain and I can't do most of the things I could before. I can't do any striking with that side, anything that causes my shoulder to jut forward - which means I can't do any combat training. Krav and UC are completely out for a while, but I've been able to go to boxing and work on my non-dominant side. Actually, that's been helpful because I was starting to notice a huge difference in strength and speed on ...

Fitness update

Running I bought a new pair of sneakers a few weeks ago for running (I needed sneakers anyway) and went for a "run" last week in Whitnall Park. They opened a new trail behind the Rock that connects with the ones behind the archery range, and I decided to explore. It turned out to be a lovely trail, but it was really long and poorly labeled. On more than one occasion I was worried I was going to get stuck in the woods past dark and have to call someone. I didn't, and while I don't actually know how long of a walk it was, I'd guess about 5 miles. I ran a decent portion of that, where it was feasible. I was pretty proud of myself because I was able to consistently run non-stop for 1.5-2 minutes at a time. Considering the previous week I was only able to run 15 seconds, it was a significant improvement. I'm guessing I just needed to get my body used to it once and the strength and endurance I had built up took over after that. Pole Not much to talk about here...

Pole 2018 Goals

Having missed a class, I went to go to a Burlesque 1, week 1 make-up class; but it turned out to be a Pole 2, week 6 class! Well, that was fine with me. The other two girls there were super cool, and I liked having Kate as a teacher much better. Sadly, there were still a ton of things (new things or things we didn't learn until much higher classes) that I couldn't do. Sad sad sad. The other gals were taking Pole 3 and since I liked them and figured I could use the recaps, I decided to sign up, too. I'll be simultaneously taking Strength and Conditioning class, so my hope is that I'll still be able to retake Pole 4 when it's all done.  So, as previously mentioned in my 2017 round-up, I took up pole again this last December (last month). The last time I took a pole class was in 2015 when I was still working at Safe & Sound, and I've been really wanting to get back into it. A lot of it was the time commitment thing, but some of it was just not wanting to ac...
