Advanced to Silks 2 - new pole studio

Quick little post to say that last week I advanced to Silks 2 at Turner Hall, which is their highest level for the advanced students. It turned out to be less difficult than I expected, although equally as intimidating; and the other girls struggled in much the same way I did, which made me feel much better. I'm pretty proud to have moved up to advanced silks in less than 6 months, a feat I attribute to all my pole training.

Speaking of pole, I finally found another studio to practice at. I'm still not sure how I feel about it, but I'm taking advanced pole classes (and a performance-choreography class) at Blush in West Allis. At first, it started off as a spinning pole class with Chelsea; and then because I had no place else to practice, I asked the owner if I could try out their advanced class.

The format is very much like the elite class was at Studio Phoenix, where you just learn whatever you want to learn and the teacher gives you 1:1 guidance. I'm not sure if I like that or not, but I know I like it at least somewhat because this teacher is actually advanced and can teach me the things I want to know. She's going to help me on my Janeiro, meathook, Batwing, and reverse elbow hooks, which I desperately need help with.

I feel better at the very least having a place to learn new things. I've also been dropping into Koko's studio in Racine; but honestly, I don't really feel comfortable with her as a teacher. She makes me feel very on edge and insecure about myself; but I like Kim, the owner, very much.

First January in Orlando

It’s been a while since I’ve posted on here. For some reason, Blogger (a totally dead platform at this point) gives me “Let’s Go Ride a Bike” vibes - in a good way. Which, by the way, I just Googled and they haven’t touched their blog since 2015. What a shame. I really miss the days of blogs.  Most of my writing has been done in a physical notebook, which in many ways I prefer; but in others, it doesn’t quite quench the thirst. One of the things I love about digital journaling is being able to add images and photos (like the one below). While physical journaling feels more intimate and perhaps, authentic in some ways, digital journaling feels more like a creating a story. Two different methods for two different outcomes.  So why the photo of a plant? Well, first, this is a Monstera plant. I’ve loved it’s lines and the holes in its leaves for years, but I never learned its name because it’s not a native plant to Wisconsin. They are to Florida, however, and are super easy to fin...

Cup grip handspring!

This video is terrible evidence, but I managed to get (and hold! Albeit briefly) my cup grip handspring earlier this week! I've been working on it for... I don't know, maybe 4 months? Before my shoulder injury. I was trying to incorporate it into my training so that I wouldn't have to only rely on twisted grip and because true grip really hurts my wrists (for the record, an article just came out saying how true grip is really bad on your wrists, which is where it hurts me). I found a YouTube video that showed getting into it from chest out, so that's how I've been training. I can't imagine trying to swing kick into it. I've been slowly feeling closer and closer to staying up, and on Monday I was finally able to do it! Seriously, it's amazing because I haven't been able to do any pole for the last 3 months due to my shoulder injury, so how did this happen?? I credit my physical therapist because she's been really working my ass off with som...

Walking around NASA

It was a slow start to a Monday, a slow start to the week. Productive, but chugga chugga... I don't feel like I did anything.  Except maybe cook. Last night I used up the rest of the pureed pumpkin I had and made a ground Italian sausage vodka sauce with browned sage and gnocchi. It was really tasty and filled me up for literally the entire day. It's the only thing I ate, save for some strawberries, grapes, and cantaloupe (half of which I cup up last night and the other half I cut up tonight) during lunch, solely because I was craving sweets, and some cheese and crackers right before lyra class because I felt like I should put something more in my body. The pumpkin vodka dish was probably 1,000+ calories just on it's own, so I should probably watch it tomorrow, but it's got a really strong balance of 1/3 protein (Italian sausage), 1/3 fiber (pumpkin), and 1/3 carbs (gnocchi). That's probably why I'm still so full, and it's after midnight.  After lyra class, ...
